A fun & creative educational hub for kids to learn about the planet, community and sustainable development goals
When my young-teenage cousin told me that he was going mostly-vegetarian because it’s better for the environment and planet, it got me thinking about what my younger-teen version was craving to eat, back at that age? Hmm, Big Macs, meat pies, chocolate shakes? A time when I was just starting to hear about what sounded like fringe groups of protesters tying themselves to trees, to stop the development of a dam. How times have changed …
Generational shift
With super-easy-access to vast volumes of “information”, and new friendships struck at ease around the world, my cuz, along with a whole generation of kids, are growing up at a time of seismic change across the world. For them, our legacy of a heating planet, and a growing gap between haves and have-nots, are top of mind. A stark difference to my rather naive, vinyl-spinning teenage days.
So it's a good reason for my adult-version to snap into action today. To help pass on a healthier, sustainable world to my cuz and his generation. Local communities, government, business - we can all play a positive role. Education is a key part of that.
The power of education & community
It’s great to hear about the “World’s Largest Lesson”(1) – a vibrant, inclusive international educational hub for kids and educators. With action-focused lessons, and creative & fun tools in over 30 languages, centered on learning about the aspirations of the UN’s 17 Sustainability Development Goals. A partnership between the UN, UNICEF and UNESCO, the World’s Largest Lesson, reaches a community of close to 18 million children in over 160 countries, encouraging them to be curious, learn from each other, and access information & ideas on how to make a positive impact, with family, friends and their local community.
Kids are genuinely concerned about their world, and for some this could understandably cause anxiousness. Listening, acknowledging, offering broader perspective and knowledge via educational hubs like the World’s Largest Lesson, can provide a positive way for kids to channel their care, grow, and have positive impact.
Great way to get involved
That’s why the adult version of the twisties-eating teenage-me, has joined WLL as a “educator”.
Undergo quick training and access a range of easy-to-conduct teaching modules, and lesson assets to facilitate creative and fun lessons and exercises suitable for kids of different ages. Open, respectful, interactive it's a great way to help open discussions with kids about sustainability and how they, and all of us, can contribute towards nurturing a more sustainable world.
Kids can learn about nature and bio-diversity; why it’s important to reduce food waste and litter, imagining a more equal world, the fun power of education, and many more topics.
So if you’re a parent, a family member, a teacher, a community leader, or simply someone who wants to help out, it’s a great way, through the power of education, to help.
The more we join in and participate, as families, communities, fellow work-mates, and friends to learn about how we can build a more sustainable world for our young, the bigger impact we can make.
OK, another lesson to plan.

At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. https://sdgs.un.org/goals
